GTA 6 editions.Standard or Ultimate?

For most people, GTA 6 Standard Edition is the safer choice: it includes the full game, and Rockstar says you can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade later. Choose Ultimate only if you already want its named in-story extras and are comfortable paying more before anyone can test their usefulness.

Standard vs Ultimate at a glance

What is in Standard Edition?

Standard includes Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar lists a digital version and a physical-looking box that contains a digital download code—not a disc.

Eligible digital preorders and purchases before the stated cutoff also include the Vintage Vice City Pack and a redeemable month of GTA+. The GTA+ month is a preorder offer, not part of Standard itself. Physical preorders include the Vintage Vice City Pack, but Rockstar’s support breakdown does not list the GTA+ month for the boxed code version.

What is in Ultimate Edition?

Ultimate includes the game and the Ultimate Edition Upgrade. Rockstar currently lists these upgrade items:

These are official names, but a name alone does not tell us how useful, powerful or time-consuming an item will be. Rockstar says the extras are threaded across Jason and Lucia’s story. We therefore do not call them “essential,” assign made-up cash values, or claim they make progress faster.

Sort the extras by the decision they affect

The official Rockstar editions page names the benefits, while Rockstar Support explains the upgrade path and chapter-by-chapter rollout. Names and artwork alone cannot settle whether the extra cost will feel worthwhile to a particular player.

Which edition is best for you?

Choose Standard if:

• You mainly want the complete base game.
• You prefer to judge optional extras after reliable reviews exist.
• You want the code-in-box option.
• You want the lower upfront price.

Consider Ultimate if:

• The complete named bonus collection matters to you.
• You prefer having those extras from the start.
• You are buying digitally.
• The confirmed price difference fits your budget without needing speculative value claims.

There is no independent launch-build test yet that proves Ultimate is “worth it.” That decision depends on whether you personally value the listed content.

If you are undecided, Standard keeps the later Upgrade option open after redeeming the game. If you already know you want the named items, Ultimate avoids a separate purchase step. Neither option has officially announced paid early gameplay access.

Can you upgrade later?

Yes. Rockstar Support says Standard owners can purchase the digital Ultimate Edition Upgrade separately after the Standard game code has been redeemed. That includes owners of the code-in-box version.

This reduces the pressure to make a blind decision now. The add-on’s future store price was not included in the official sources checked for this page, so do not assume upgrading later will cost the same as today’s edition difference.

Rockstar Support says the Upgrade is a digital add-on through PlayStation or Microsoft stores. Before buying it later, confirm you are signed into the account that owns the Standard game and that the add-on is compatible with your platform and region. The upgrade is not a replacement for the base game.

Preorder bonuses are separate

The Vintage Vice City Pack is a time-limited purchase benefit, not the same thing as the Ultimate upgrade. Rockstar lists a ’55 Vapid Stanier Sedan and Garage, outfits and hairstyles, and an exclusive weapon pattern in the pack.

A note about the box

Calling the boxed Standard version a “physical disc” would be wrong. Rockstar says the box contains a download code and no disc. You still need an internet connection and enough storage to download the game. Codes and PlayStation accounts also need compatible regions.
